Many of you already know that I enjoy seeing biographical movies, so it was pertinent for me to see this film.

Mark Wahlberg is the lead actor in the film and he portrays Michael "Mike" Williams. One of the Wahlberg's greatest assets as an actor is the dedication he has for roles. Rather than trying to understand his characters, he makes the extra effort to actually learn about his characters. For example, while filming his other biographic film The Lone Survivor, Wahlberg trained with U.S. Navy Seals so he was able to better relate and understand the mental, personal, and physical struggles of his role. He does the same for this film where, according to Movie Plot*, he trained 100 days while also being on a very strict diet in order to portray-- yet again-- another accurate depiction his character of Mike Williams and the other oil-rig workers.

Another admiring aspect of the film is how director Peter Berg humanizes the tragic events of Deepwater Horizon as opposed to dramatizing them. In addition, Berg aims at bringing awareness to this life-changing event that has been forgotten by both the media and the public for years.

It was apparent that everyone involved in this film aimed at accomplishing just that, by displaying the events that occurred on that deadly day.

Highlights:

  • The film is believable, to the point where the audience feels as if they there during the explosion.

  • The overall cinematography of the film captures the essence and integrity of a film's story.

  • While the film centralizes on the story of Mike Williams, it also portrays the life of oil-rig worker, and the mental and physical struggles they face every day on the job.

  • Giving awareness to a historical event, that deserves recognition.

Lowlights:

  • Ultimately, the film glazed over the topic that the even though it was unintentional, the oil spill of Deepwater Horizon is to be blamed for the biggest ecological disasters in United States history.
