★★★☆☆

For those who have seen the original 'Blair Witch Project' (1999), this movie felt very familiar in the way it developed. I felt the original movie was successful in being suspenseful but lacked any really thrilling scenes until the last couple minutes. 'Blair Witch' (2016) however, fulfilled my need for more thrilling scenes and had me at the edge of my seat for the last 30-40 minutes.

I'm not a huge fan of the "found footage" genre (Cloverfield and As Above, So Below are other examples of this) because of its amateur feel, but this one took a more progressive take on the idea by having small portable ear piece cameras to display perspectives from each characters' eye views as well as a drone camera to take some of this amateur feel out of just having a hand held clunker (however one character does have one of these to tribute the original movie).

The acting was average but not disappointing and it felt right not seeing a Mark Wahlberg or Jennifer Lawrence in this type of film. The music and the camera shots were excellent and helped create tense moments and were very successful in keeping you on edge ready for some of those chilling pop-up scenes.

Overall, I recommend seeing this movie if you are a fan of the first one. If you haven't seen the first one, I still think this movie is worth your money and had me leaving the theater with goosebumps and checking my shoulder in the parking lot.
